Dalit History Month 2026
Savitribai Phule, Fatima Sheikh, Ramabai Ambedkar, Jhano Murmu and Phulo Murmu “Watering the Seeds of Collective Liberation”
This year’s Dalit History Month poster represents nurturing through Knowledge, Assertion, and Sustainability.
The plant of resistance continues to grow,
watered across generations through struggle, care, defiance, and vision.
They refused to let the soil stay barren.
Watered by Savitribai Phule,
who turned learning into liberation,
and Fatima Sheikh,
who stood firm
when standing came with a cost.
Held by the quiet leadership of Ramabai Ambedkar,
who reminds us that movements are not only built in public,
but are also led and sustained through intimate, often unseen labour,
through care, nourishment, and the courage to hold everything together.
Rooted in the fierce resistance of Jhano Murmu and Phulo Murmu,
who knew that even the hardest ground can be broken,
that growth can be forged through courage against oppression.
Together, they are not just ancestors,
they are the conditions of our present.
This Dalit History Month, we remember and recognize:
that we are living, learning, creating, and loving
because of the waters they carried to us.
This plant carries memory.
This plant carries struggle.
This plant carries us.
And as it grows,
so must we.
But—
What will we carry forward?
What will we nurture next?
This year, our theme for the Dalit History Month is:
Growing through ART: Assertion, Reflection, Transformation.
Assertion, to name our histories, our truths, our right to exist and resist.
Reflection, to learn from what has been, to hold memory with care and clarity.
Transformation, to imagine and build the worlds we deserve.
